![]() One can’t know, of course, if Woolf’s “The Hours” would have been a lesser novel than her Mrs. Dalloway that has become a cornerstone of 20th-century literature. ![]() Had Woolf completed a novel called “The Hours,” it would not have been the Mrs. Woolf’s new title for her novel-in-progress implied that she’d decided, relatively early on, that she was not going to write, not exactly, the book she’d initially set out to write. Writers often change the titles of their books, often more than once, as they write them, and sometimes the reconsidering of a title reflects a deeper shift in the evolving nature of the book itself. But, as far as I can tell, novelists rarely if ever solve mysteries novelists can only hope to illuminate and deepen essential human enigmas and to chart the points at which relatively simple questions blossom out into profound ones. I hope no one will be disappointed to hear that, in my own novel, I don’t solve that particular mystery. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() He's currently rewriting the script - which was drafted by Ben Collins and Luke Piotrowsky - and is looking to shoot this year. The Inheritance Cycle Christopher Paolini 4 Books Collection ![]() ![]() The characters in Shaw's play, especially Major Sergius Saranoff, serve to underscore the traditional heroism in war of the epic. In Shaw's vision, war is dirty, brutal, unforgiving, and serves to support the inequalities inherent in the society. Rather than praising "arms" & the men who use them by describing epic battle scenes and glorious triumphs, Shaw is dissecting the reality of war, showing the futile nature of taking up those arms. ![]() However, because Shaw's play is a satire, the title should be looked at ironically. The Aeneid stands as a glorious epic, depicting battles as defined by their heroes, who emerge from the war triumphant. In Virgil, "the man" is, of course, Aeneas, and "arms" refers to the Trojan War & Aeneas' journey from Greece. The title is an allusion to the first line of Virgil's Aeneid. Let us apply these criteria for judging the aptness of the title of George Bernard Shaw’s plays Arms and the Man. As a signboard indicates the contents of a shop, so also a good title should indicate the theme of the play. ![]() It should also be attractive and sticking to capture the attention of the audience or the readers.
